A delicate pencil seascape showing a scattered fleet of small sailing boats adrift on a hazy sea. Lowry's love of maritime subjects traced back to childhood — as he recalled in 1966, it was a boyhood drawing of a ship that first pointed him toward art: "I'd drawn a little ship when I was eight years of age. So that was that. It was any port in a storm." He kept returning to the sea throughout his life: "I'm very fond of ships. The sea, too, I love. To watch it is like letting off steam: it's so vast." A quiet, meditative counterpoint to his industrial scenes.

We are delighted to be offering this drawing from the Estate of L.S.Lowry which he bequeathed to the previous owner. The works in the collection ranged from early 1920's to the early 1970's. Lowry travelled around the British Isles extensively after his retirement from the Pall Mall Property Company in 1952 and he continued to be inspired by the cast of Northern Characters who inspired him to continue to paint and draw fro the rest of his life. The collection has only been displayed to the public whilst being on Loan to The Lowry.
