A delicate pencil seascape showing a scattered fleet of small sailing boats adrift on a hazy sea. Lowry's love of maritime subjects traced back to childhood — as he recalled in 1966, it was a boyhood drawing of a ship that first pointed him toward art: "I'd drawn a little ship when I was eight years of age. So that was that. It was any port in a storm." He kept returning to the sea throughout his life: "I'm very fond of ships. The sea, too, I love. To watch it is like letting off steam: it's so vast." A quiet, meditative counterpoint to his industrial scenes.

We are delighted to be offering this drawing from the Estate of L.S.Lowry which he bequeathed to the previous owner. The collection has only been displayed to the public whilst being on Loan to The Lowry.
