  • "My work is derived from and inspired by sight, sound and emotion from the real world and my belief that painting is a timeless, emotive and transcendental means of expression. I believe the process of painting is integral to its content and the quality of foremost importance. I aim to set up a tension in my paintings between spontaneity and risk and a more measured controlled approach. Within this approach I strive to create paintings that have the right balance in mood, light, texture, brushwork, placement, incident and structure. To flick, smudge, pour, spray, spread, scrape, rub, splat, squeeze, draw, scribble and dribble in order to create tough, uncompromising paintings which carry the weight of art history and relate to people on many levels."- Quote directly from Michael Bourne

Matthew Bourne derives his work from his passion for metaphysical concepts such as

sight, sound, emotion and time. As a result, Bourne argues that his abstract paintings

are timeless due to the emotive qualities and transcendental means of expression.

Bourne’s work is abstracted because he spends time focusing on the process of

painting, rather than solely the subject matter. He believes the process of painting is

integral to its content and the quality of foremost importance. Not only focusing on the

process, and trying to raise awareness in the viewer of the process, Bourne aims to set

up a tension in his paintings between spontaneity and risk and a more measured

controlled approach. Within this approach, the paintings include both a mix of

abstracted and recognisable qualities. Bourne says, “I strive to create paintings thathave the right balance in mood, light, texture, brushwork, placement, incident and

structure. To flick, smudge, pour, spray, spread, scrape, rub, splat, squeeze, draw,

scribble and dribble in order to create tough, uncompromising paintings which carry the

weight of art history and relate to people on many levels. I strive for my paintings to

feel timeless being both ancient and modern at the same time, creating an appreciation

of the history and passing of time within the landscape.

My paintings are a celebration of oil paint as a relevant, magical poetic and expressive

    medium.

They are a journey into my internal honesty, sensitivity, belief and conviction in

formalism, something which has been embedded in my practice for over 30 years.

Whether through representational clues or pure abstraction the same principles apply.”

I am always searching for the surprise and wonder a painting can convey. To be taken to a different realm. Trying to go beyond the visible and known. To engage in a true act of discovery.

I also sometimes engage in the ugly, aggressive crude or even vulgar as these can conjure unsettling juxtapositions played against the beautiful, calm and serene. The applications of paint : thick impasto, gloopy, viscous played along side thin washes, veils, drips and poured paint set up theatrical tensions which are my preferred poetic expression.

The paintings are by no means esoteric but they demand time. They will reveal most generously to those who invest in the visual journey they deserve.

Flowers, Nature, and Contemporary Painting23 Apr - 1 Jun 2020
Contemporary Six is delighted to present the mixed online exhibition In Bloom featuring paintings by a number of artists. We are offering free delivery for all paintings purchased in the exhibition.* More information to follow.

Each artist will display several works which take the beauty of flowers as their subject. Whether sunflowers or waterlilies, peonies or poppies, flowers have been an eternal fascination of painters throughout the ages. The flower-vase still life was immortalised in western art history with the Dutch painters of the 17th Century, but contemporary painters, too, have found new ways to reinvigorate the simple flower — poised as it is between vulnerability and flamboyance. In this exhibition, Contemporary Six unfurls the flower in contemporary painting to reveal new, innovative ways of depicting its organic beauty.

Matthew Bourne is a British painter known for his expressive and atmospheric depictions of the natural world. Working mainly in oil, he captures the textures, colours, and shifting moods of the countryside, often focusing on areas in the north of England. His paintings blend observation with imagination, creating landscapes that feel both familiar and dreamlike. Bourne’s energetic brushwork and layered surfaces give his work a lively, tactile quality. His approach shows a deep sensitivity to the changing seasons, light conditions, and natural forms that shape the rural environment.

I use whatever comes to hand oil paint, copious amounts of linseed oil, oil sticks, collage, Brushes, palette knives, String, syringes, bottle tops, wire wool, sticks, nails, rags, hair, grass, leaves freshly sheared sheeps wool and so on. However, I never work on board."- Quote from Michael Bourne

Matthew Bourne draws inspiration from the rural landscapes of northern England, particularly the hills, fields, and rivers of areas like Yorkshire and Derbyshire. He is fascinated by the changing light and weather conditions that constantly transform the countryside. His work reflects an emotional response to place rather than a direct, photographic representation. Through loose brushwork and layered colour, Bourne evokes the feel of open spaces, shifting skies, and seasonal change. His landscapes are built as much from memory and feeling as from direct observation, giving them a timeless and expressive quality. Michael stated his inspiration comes from "Everywhere, Landscape, both rural and urban all aspects of nature and the pure marvel of transformative quality of paint. Areas of the country I tend to paint are Derbyshire, Yorkshire Wales and Norfolk".

Matthew Bourne’s style blends elements of traditional landscape painting with a freer, more expressive modern approach. His paintings are known for their bold compositions, textured surfaces, and loose, gestural brushwork. Bourne often simplifies forms, focusing instead on the rhythms of the landscape and the changing effects of light and weather. This gives his work a sense of movement and vitality. Rather than aiming for exact detail, he captures the emotional atmosphere of a place, allowing the viewer to feel the landscape’s presence through rich colour and dynamic structure. When asked about hsi style Michael says "It is not about the actual subject, it is the materiality of the painting and the poetic notion of the paint."

Over time, Matthew Bourne’s work has become increasingly confident in its abstraction and use of texture. Early pieces were more closely tied to direct observation, but his recent paintings show a greater emphasis on mood, memory, and emotional response. His use of thicker paint, broader marks, and layered colour has deepened, giving the surfaces of his paintings a rich, almost tactile quality. This evolution reflects Bourne’s growing focus on the internal experience of landscape, creating works that balance the real and the imagined in striking, expressive ways.
