Russell Howarth was born in Oldham, Lancashire in 1929. He worked as an engineer until 1981 and since that date has lectured part-time. Russell has been painting all his life and has always been fascinated by the landscapes around his hometown of Saddleworth. He interprets landscape in his own unique way, favouring a muted palette of greys, olive greens and browns, and adopting a technique somewhat akin to English surrealism.
Though his colours are subdued, his understanding of the tonal qualities in a picture is remarkable. Over the years, Russell has exhibited extensively throughout the North-West (Tib Lane Gallery, Manchester, The Royal Northern College of Music etc.) and in London at The Royal Society of British Artists and in other London venues.
