  • Biography

Jenny Aitken ARSMA is a specialist in contre-jour painting (working directly against the light) and describes her style as a form of contemporary impressionism. Her practice developed through a combination of studio work and painting en plein air, drawing on her background in photography to sharpen her sensitivity to the subtle fluctuations of light.

She graduated from UCW Aberystwyth in 1997 with a BA Joint Honours in Art & Art History. In 2023, she was elected a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists and received the prestigious Baltic Exchange Award.

Although now based in Derbyshire, on the edge of the Lake District, Jenny’s artistic focus remains the sea. With family roots in Cornwall and the Channel Islands, she is inspired by the shifting light, colour, and movement of the ocean, seeking to capture the places she loves most.
