  • Linda Schwab is a British painter known for her evocative, dreamlike artworks that blend contemporary and nostalgic elements. A graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art, she draws inspiration from photography, using both personal and found images to craft paintings that capture fleeting moments and distant memories. Her work is characterised by layered imagery, soft edges, and figures in everyday scenes, like standing on a beach, picnicking, or posing with a pet rendered in a way that feels both familiar and ethereal.

Schwab’s art transcends the ordinary, creating a sense of mystery and introspection. Alongside her studio practice, she has contributed to major public art projects in hospitals and city centers across the UK, enhancing spaces with her thoughtful compositions. Whether in private collections or public installations, Schwab’s work invites viewers to reflect on time, memory, and the beauty found in life’s fleeting moments.

Linda Schwab studied BA Fine Art in Preston and has an MA in painting from the Slade School of Fine Art. She has worked as an illustrator, educator and Public Artist and has now returned to painting full time.

The starting point for her work falls into two categories; ‘recent events’, from life or mobile phone photos and ‘recreated events’, from archive or found photographs.

The paintings capture something mysterious and unknown, someone or something seen at a distance, and committed to memory.

She describes the process of painting as starting with an objective record and ending with an attempt to capture what can be sensed at the peripheries of vision.

Linda has paintings in private and public collections and award winning public art in situ in Leeds City Centre and hospitals across the country.

  • FAQs

Linda Schwab is a British painter based in Yorkshire. She earned her BA in Fine Art from the University of Central Lancashire and an MA in Painting from the Slade School of Fine Art. Throughout her career, she has worked as an illustrator, educator, and public artist, and has now returned to painting full-time.

Schwab's creative process involves two main categories: 'recent events,' inspired by life or mobile phone photos, and 'recreated events,' based on archive or found photographs. This approach allows her to capture something mysterious and unknown, often depicting subjects seen at a distance and committed to memory.

Schwab's paintings often explore themes of memory, nostalgia, and the transient nature of human experience. By blending contemporary and nostalgic elements, she creates evocative, dreamlike environments that encourage viewers to reflect on their own memories and experiences.

Schwab has made significant contributions to public art, with installations in various locations, including Newcastle Cathedral, Alder Hey in the Park, and the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital. Her work in these settings aims to enhance environments through high-quality contemporary art and design.

Linda Schwab’s work is regularly exhibited at Contemporary Six, a leading independent gallery based in both Manchester and Hale. These galleries showcase a range of her paintings, allowing visitors to see her distinctive, dreamlike compositions up close. It’s best to check their website or contact them directly for current and upcoming exhibitions.
