Northern Soul Awards 2018

Contemporary Six Best Gallery and Best Exhibition nominations...

We are most honoured to say that we have been nominated for not one, but two, Northern Soul 2018 awards. After a year of very hard work, planning and implementation, the Gallery has been shortlisted in both the Gallery of the Year and Exhibition of the Year 2018 categories.

It's a real privilege to be considered for the Gallery of the Year prize alongside such esteemed venues as Castlefield Gallery, Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art, Newcastle's Hatton Gallery, and The Lowry (!!!). The long term plan of the Gallery is to bring exciting, substantial, original art into Manchester, to provide work you can not find in the city at present. Over the past year we have made strides in achieving that, positioning the best of local artists alongside some of the best from further afield.

For our Exhibition of the Year nomination, we must thank Chris Cyprus whose 'Northern Lights' solo show captured the hearts and hopes of the North of England. A huge success with queues spilling out on the street, it was widely covered in local press, and even featured on the BBC's North West Tonight.

The Gallery's owner Alex Reuben was this year's stand-out selection for Northern Soul's Great Northerners list, alongside such eminent individuals as World Cup hero Jordan Pickford; comedy sweetheart Peter Kay; Doctor Who and Broadchurch star Jodie Whittaker; and Dinnerladies, Shameless, Hamlet, and Peterloo actress Maxine Peake. Alex isn't letting it go to his head, though he adds England had a leaky defence in the World Cup, Carshare was rubbish, Doctor Who is for kids, and Julie Walters was better.
