Rod Kippen

Manchester photographer Rod Kippen was one of the winners of the 2009 ‘Capture Manchester’ competition.

Since graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 1996, Rod has been photographing Manchester and its surrounding areas as the basis of his work to find the form, colour and associations that exist within the details that make up the area.  Using the forgotten parts and back streets of cities and towns Kippen’s work concentrates on the pictorial.

Kippen plays with the idea of a city being made up of a build-up of surfaces creating layers through the impact of lives lived as well as being affected by other environmental factors which have aged the surfaces and the layers.

Kippen is influenced by 20th century painters, and this is reflected in what catches his eye and in looking at composition within the subject. He has in turn seen the images as studies for paintings and is experimenting with painting and sculpture based work with photography.
